Current Favourites (Life Update)

Hello 🙂

It has been a while. While I have been busting to blog,  finding the time and energy of late has been a little difficult. I have had 100’s of ideas swirling around and posts writing themselves in my head, but when I finally tried to put fingers to keyboard I would lose all sorts of cognitive function and become a drivelling mess. But there is a really good reason for that – I’m pregnant! The first trimester knocked me around a lot and some days it was a struggle just to get out of bed to make a cuppa (even though I would throw that up 10 minutes afterwards…). Combine that with working full-time and house-hunting, our day-to-day life has been a bit all over the place. But, alas, at 19 weeks I am finally feeling like my normal self. Well, as normal as you can feel with a small child sucking the life out of you.

While I am hoping to continue blogging about beauty products, it makes sense that my ideas of what is important may change and the topics I write about broaden, but I will continue to write with honesty and integrity, keeping my readers in mind. I hope that you will enjoy coming along for the ride in this exciting yet, slightly terrifying time.

Considering a few months have passed, I thought I would jump straight into sharing some of my favourite products.

Gilded Cage Revelation Cream Eyeshadows*

Being incredibly time poor has found me reaching for more practical items. Even though I am on the hunt for more time efficient products, that doesn’t mean I will settle for a poor performing product. My standards are as high as ever and Gilded Cage have delivered the goods. Their cream eyeshadows deliver on pigment, longevity and practicality all while saving me time each morning. The formula applies like a dream and is easily blended out for a polished look. I do need to use an eye-primer with these (as I do for all eyeshadows) to ensure they go the distance without creasing. The shades are gorgeous and allow you to go from work wear, to something a little more smokey. I cannot fault these eyeshadows.

IMG_4252

MooGoo Shea Sorbet*

This fabulous thick cream has been saving my skin from the dreaded winter flakiness. While it does take a bit of effort to warm up and make it emulsify, it certainly is worth it. MooGoo Shea Sorbet smells fresh and moisturises like no other. While it is typically meant for cracked heals and super dehydrated skin, I have been smothering it all over my growing body and it has been working an absolute treat. No scaly skin in sight. There is a damn good reason I have been a lover of MooGoo for over 6 years.

Obagi Hydrate Luxe Moisturier*

My poor skin seems to be suffering with winter more than ever. It is a little sensitive and super dehydrated. So instead of my normal gel based moisturiser I have decided to opt for something a bit heavier. I have a lot of trust in Obagi products and tend to revert back to them if I am having a skin issue. I have been using the Hydrate Luxe Moisturiser and it has addressed all my concerns. While this moisturiser is super thick, it absorbs easily and leaves my skin hydrated and happy. I do only use this at night, as I feel it might make me a little greasy throughout the day. It is probably one of the more heavier creams I have ever use, but it is certainly agreeing with my oily mug.

IMG_6837

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield*

I have mentioned Murad a few times on my channels, because I am pretty damn obsessed with their skincare range.  There are a few superstar products and the Invisiblur Perfecting Shield certainly is one of them.  This bad boy blurs out my massive pores and makes my skin feel so damn silky. It sits beautifully under makeup and looks even better without it.  I tend not to wear too much makeup over the weekend and this little bottle of magic has been getting a work out.

NYX Total Control Drops

The hype around these foundation drops are real! The formula is light, but super pigmented. They allow you to customise your coverage without looking too cakey. The foundation blends easily and leaves the skin with a satin but slightly powdery finish. Applying  these drops is an absolute breeze. The longevity is on point and so far I cannot find any flaws.

Burts Bees Complete Nourishment Facial Oil

Another product I have been using to banish the winter skin blues is the Burts Bees Nourishment Facial Oil. This oil is seriously light-weight and easily absorbed. I am able to use this under makeup without a worry and I’ve noticed that it actually makes my under eye concealer sit better. Not only is the formula just heavenly, but the lavender fragrance really adds to the overall experience of the product. This stuff is liquid gold.

IMG_1208

Silk’n Revit Diamond Microdermabrasion System*

I would absolutely love to get monthly microderms, they really brighten up my complexion and leave my skin fresh, glowy and plump. But, I cannot justify the price for regular treatments when I have so much going on. Enter the ReVit device. This little at home microdermabrasion really is the next best thing. It is super easy to use and gives me those fresh glowy results I love so much. Plus I can use this whenever I have a spare 10 minutes, in the comfort of my own home. You can even customise the treatment to suit your skin tone, sensitivity and needs. What a winner.  After a few months of use, my skin is looking healthy and clear. No need to fork out each week for professional treatments.

This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray

Oh myyyy sweet lavender jesus, where has this been my whole life? I am a huge believer in the way scents can affect our mood and well being.  This little gem has turned into an absolute must have in my life. The fragrance is soft and instantly calming. It is said to have an almost sedative effect which I can vouch for. My stresses and tensions melt away as soon as I lay down in my lavender and chamomile scented bed. I even keep a little travel spray of this glorious concoction in my handbag to have a sniff whenever work is crushing my will to live.

IMG_2656

Hourglass Everything

And lastly, I have been obsessed with everything and anything Hourglass. While these are far from new favourites, they certainly have been getting a work out. The blushes add the most delicious healthy looking glow to my skin without looking too overdone or too unnatural. My personal faves are Mood Exposure – A stunning plummy/mauve shade that would look right at home on any skintone and Brilliant Nude – a very subtle peach that adds the most perfect amount of life to otherwise dull cheeks. The Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light is a daily staple. I use this as the last step of my routine and I dust it lightly over the whole face, it adds a ‘lit from within’ look and makes me so damn glowy and alive looking – I cannot go without out.  I really need to buy the whole Hourglass collection!

Apologies for the couple of stock photos – the blog post took me long enough to write. I gotta ease back into it.

What have you been loving recently?

Best in Beauty ’16

2016 – A year that was categorised by so many as one of the worst. For me, I wouldn’t say that 2016 was a particularly bad year, it was year with ups and downs, laughter and tears. I have an attitude of upwards and onwards every damn day, and to not get dragged down by trivial concerns.  I like to roll the the punches and just sit back and enjoy the ride.

blackbird

As we start the yearly cycle all over again, I wanted to highlight some of my favourite beauty discoveries in 2016 – This encompasses cosmetics, skincare and  health & well being. While it is not a definitive it does touch on many favourites. There is a very good chance I have already mentioned most of these products at one stage or another, but I will link any specific blog posts, and please let me know if you would like more in-depth writing about anything at all.

So strap yourself in, it is going to be a doozy of a post – I probably should have broken it down into 2 different posts, but what’s the fun in that.

MAKEUP

img_1489

Soleil Tan De Chanel has to be one of my absolute favourite makeup items this year.  For so long I read rave reviews, however I always struggled with the price point. I mean, how good could a cream bronzer possibly be? I can add depth to my face without spending over $50. I blame a combination of late night YouTube binging, a bad day and having many hours to kill in a shopping centre for this little purchase. But I think she was always meant to be mine. It may not work miracles, but it does so much more than just contour. Soleil Tan De Chanel adds warmth, depth, a natural looking sunkissed complexion and an overall look of healthy glowy goodness.  A little goes a long way, and after 6 months of almost daily use, I have hardly made a dint in its bronzed swirly magic. I like to blend it out with a damp Beauty Blender underneath my cheekbones, along my hairline and if I am feeling particularly feisty, along the sides of my nose to contour. I cannot stress to you enough how natural this looks and how beautifully it blends.

img_9711

As a total palette hoarder, how could I possibly only pick one to mention? Of course ABH Modern Renaissance has to be mentioned. The formula of this palette is unlike any other. It blends  together so perfectly and gives off this stunning satin sheen. The pink and red colour palette is spot on for me, what an absolute winner. But, my palette collection increased significantly this year and I just HAVE to show some love to a few others. I actually bought the Violet Voss Holy Grail palette well before ABH MR, and it really allowed me to dive into the world of red and burgundy.  The shade selection is insane, along with the pigment and quality. This little baby needs to be included in any warm toned collection.

img_9508

img_1172

I also have to mention Juvia’s Palace Nubian palette. What a little gem. The formula is buttery and soft, and applies so well to the lid. There is little to no fall out and the colour pay-off just makes my heart sing. An honourable mention has to go to Zoeva Blanc Fushion and Caramel Melange. Zoeva create the most stunning palettes and these newbies are no exception. I  have only had these guys for just over a month, but they have gotten so much use already.

img_2491

I have absolutely fallen head over heels in love with anything Stevie K Cosmetics. Stevie K is gaining traction in the beauty world, and for good reason. This incredible Australian indie makeup brand is just kicking goal after goal. I also have to mention that the Brand Manger, Kate is an absolute babe and I sort of want to be her. Their lipsticks are just perfection. They are pigmented, creamy, non-drying and long lasting. The packing is so sleek and sexy, plus the artwork on the box has been inspired by Melbourne Street Art. My personal favourites are ‘BEE‘ and ‘GIRLBOSS‘. They recently released a range of Colour Shot* single eyeshadows that are unlike anything I have every tried. The shades are so so so bright. I generally find that matte colours can be quite chalky and not overly pigmented, but Stevie K have completely changed that. The pigment and colour pay-off of these little babies seriously blows my mind-hole. I just adore ‘Faster Pussycat‘. I think everyone needs to jump onto the Stevie K bandwagon, there is nothing out there quite like the brand. I am so excited to see what the new releases are for the year.

img_5397

Speaking of Aussie brands, I have used the Eye Of Horus Mascara for a few years now and it is one of my favourite everyday mascaras. However, I recently discovered their dual brow* product and I know I have found a winner. The pencil is so easy to use, applies perfectly and is such a good colour (Mine is in the shade husk). But the brow gel is everything. It hold my brows in place like nothing else. Those bad boys are not moving. I love that my brows still look natural and not caked in product while being bullet-proof…well, not really. But you get what I mean.

img_3923

Lastly in makeup I have to include a few items from my new favourite brand, IT Cosmetics. Their Your Skin But Better CC+ Liquid Foundation and Pressed Powder has changed my daily makeup routine. The foundation is light, but full of coverage. It is long-lasting , controls my oil production and contains 50+ SPF. I simply adore it and really encourage everyone to try it. The CC+ pressed powder isn’t nearly as highly raved about, and I don’t know why. In my opinion, I like it better than it’s liquid counterpart – and that is saying something.  It isn’t heavy or cakey, it just provides the most gorgeous sheen. I find that it really controls my greasy T-zone while making my complexion look bright, healthy and quite natural. I like to use this baby by itself, or to set foundations. See-you-later-bye Austrlis Fresh and Flawless, Your Skin But Better CC+ Airbrush Perfecting Powder is my new number one.

SKINCARE

2016  was a year full of skincare. I really devoted much more time and energy into looking after my skin. So, needless to say that I discovered a whole heap of favourites. My absolute, above all, holy grail discovery was more of a concept or ingredient than a specific product. I really dig deep into the world of Chemical Exfoliation, and I know for a fact that this is what has really lifted my skincare game. It is what has made the most improvement to my skin’s texture, congestion and overall health. As a quick break down, physical scrubs buff away the dead skin cells on the surface, whereas chemical exfoliants (AHA’s and BHA’s) go deeper and penetrate more layers of skin. They dissolve dead skin cells and actually promote skin rejuvenation. I mostly stuck to using AHA’s like Glycolic Acid and Lactic acids, but I think I am going to look more into BHA’s this year.

IMG_5162 (2)

The first of three AHA based product I discovered this year was the Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub** – This product has the best of both worlds with it being both a chemical and physical exfoliator. I use this in the shower a couple of times a week and like most AHA’s you can actually feel it getting to work.  It leaves my skin super smooth, refined and even a little glowy. I am on my fourth tube, that is how much I adore it.

img_6154

The Beauty Chef Probiotic Skin Refiner is another really special product. Firstly, I love the whole concept behind the brand – Nourishing your skin from the outside in. This Toner is actually a by-product of another, but it has turned out to be an absolute winner. Not only does it rid the skin of pesky dead skin cells and congestion, but it also hydrates and boosts the skins collagen production. Need I say more? My skin is always left super soft and smooth, and I think that it allows my serums and moisturiser absorb easier.

img_2273

The next discovery I just have to mention is the Dr Dennis Gross Alpha-Beta Universal Daily Peel** – What a mouthful! As the name suggests, these little swipeys contain both Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids. This is a two-step system that exfoliates, treats and hydrates the skin all in one. I utterly adore not only the Dr Dennis Gross brand, but this product. While they are a little pricey, for as long as I can afford to, I will continue to purchase these. After only a few days use my skin looked so healthy and glowy. As a long time sufferer of texture and blackheads, these particular peels made the biggest difference.

img_9279

I have mentioned my Clarisonic* numerous times on all my social media channels and that’s because I now can’t live without it. The Mia Fit is so compact and easy to use. I was utterly shocked at seeing the amount of product it removed from my face, even after washing prior with my old method. I have this device to thank for my clean skin. Coming from someone who pretty much always had a fiery red whitehead somewhere on my face, and now I only get the very occasional one. The combination of my Clarisonic and AHA’s has done my skin a world of good and I actually feel confident showing my bare face – I would never ever of guessed that!

img_3234

CINCH Face Cheat* has been a really surprising discovery. This little one-step wonder provides 5 different benefits in one. I like using it as a primer, an added boost of hydration and even a little added glow during the day.  The product itself is light enough to work with my greaseball face but really gives me a good dose of moisture. Face Cheat is innovative, practical and a whole heap of fun.

My absolute favourite moisturiser of the year has been Clinique Moisiture Surge*. This gel-cream hybrid just works so damn well with my skin. It is light and refreshing but really packs a punch in the hydration department. It leaves my skin soft and plump without leaving behind any sticky residue or oil. It is perfect to use in the morning before makeup and moisturising enough to use at night before bed. I love this little pink jar of goodness.

HAIRCARE

I am a bit of a creature of habit when it comes to haircare. I know what works for me and I generally stick with it.But, with that being said, I fell in love with a hydrating Mask. That mask would be the Tigi Catwalk Oatmeal & Honey Intense Nourishing Mask**. This mask smells so so so good and leaves my hair so silky soft. It isn’t too heavy and really hydrates my dry, fine strands. I like to use it a few times a week to maintain the health of my hair. I have gone through 4(!) of these tubs and I am just about onto my fifth. My new haircare love.

MISC.

This is a bit of a strange inclusion, but I really wanted to mention it. The Juju cup is a menstrual cup that cuts down on waste and costs while being a more natural and safer alternative to tampons. It is super practical and once you get the hang of it, it is really easy to use. I won’t go into too much detail, for those who aren’t interested. But I am happy to chat to anyone who is slightly curious.

Laser Clinic Australia has been a frequently visited place this year. After taking the plunge and getting laser hair removal. I have also had semi regular peels and microdermabrasions**. These treatments really give my skin a boost, and is just a little more heavy-duty than my at-home skincare and my skin has really been reaping the benefits.  LCA always have incredible deals going, I got my laser for only $19 a session which is cheaper than buying razors! It has been so amazing not to worry about any hair when going to the beach or wearing a summer dress. All the treatments that I have had done were pain-free, fuss-free and positive experiences. I already have a few session booked in for January and February.

You’re still here? Well done! Thank you for reading my meaningless dribble. What have your favourites been in the last year? Did we have anything similar?

What are Microbeads? What are the best Microbead-free scrubs?

I am a huge lover of anything exfoliating. Whether it be chemical or physical, I love getting it all over my face and removing that pesky dead and dry skin. I’d do almost anything for fresh, bright smooth skin….almost anything. One thing I won’t do is knowingly endanger the environment, especially our sea creatures, in the name of glowy skin.

Let me introduce you to an ingredient in most physical scrubs – Microbeads. I am sure you’ve met MB before, you are probably quite well acquainted. I would even go as far as saying that microbeads have been all up in your face before. Microbeads are generally responsible for the exfoliating action you feel as you scrub. Sure they feel good, but I promise you, they are evil.

Microbeads are little tiny weeny balls of plastic that create a real danger for both our planet and its inhabitants. One tube of scrub can contain upwards of 300,000 little balls of evil, that is just ONE TUBE. These beads are washed straight down the drain, too small to be filtered through sewerage systems and ultimately end up in our oceans. Filled with chemicals these mircobeads poison the water as well as marine-life. And these little devil-beads are adding up. Although there have been calls from the Australian Government to ban the use of microbeads, this still has not happened. So, currently it is up to us, as consumers, to limit the use of these products until they are phased out.

IMG_8723

What can you do?

Opt for organic skincare, or products that highlight the use of natural exfoliants. Check labels for the keyword polyethylene and steer clear. Some of my personal favourites are listed below with not a devil-bead in sight.

Antipodes Reincarnation Pure Facial Exfoliator

This creamy scrub is perfect for dry skin. It is super gentle and hydrating. Full of rich oils to nourish and balance the skin. Plus it is completely organic, cruelty free and created by our lovely kiwi neighbours.

Skinsitut Glycolic Scrub 14%

Want something a little more cosmeceutical? This scrub definitely packs a punch. Full of glycolic acid, Tea Tree Oil and Jojoba beads. I use this when my skin is breaking out and  in dire need of a cleanout.Although it isn’t organic, it is one of my all time favourites. Not recommended for sensitive skin

St. Ives Green Tea Scrub

This scrub used to be my ride or die face scrub, we were mutually exclusive for a good 18 months. This scrub is full of antioxidants and obviously, green tea. It is great for fighting free-radicals and reducing redness in the skin. This can bit a little abrasive, so I would recommend this to normal/combo/oily skin.

Manuka Doctor ApiClear Purifying Facial Scrub

I am currently loving all things Manuka Doctor. My skin really reacts well to the antibacterial and nourishing properties of Manuka Honey. This particular scrub brightens, resurfaces and refines the skin, while noy drying it out. I would recommend using this scrub on normal to oily complexions.

IndeedLabs Facial Powdered Exfoliator

This is such a great product. It is a gritty type of powder that you mix with your regular cleanser or water to get some exfoliating action.  Skin feels so smooth, polished and clean. It is full of amazing products like pineapple enzyme, bamboo extract and red algae. This powder promotes a high cell turnover, collagen production ans skin renewal.

IMG_8722

I am sure there are many other beauty battles on our hands, and I know I am still struggling using  products that have been tested on animals, one step at a time…

Speak soon lovers,

Camille

Magnesium Benefits – AmazingOils

Hi Petals –
Have you, like me, heard a bit about Magnesium lately? I have read a few blog posts about this miracle worker and the benefits sound unreal! So, what is it all about?

Firstly I’d like to take some words from the AmazingOils website – “Before I even begin writing – a warning: It’s complicated’ because magnesium is essential for so many bodily functions that its influence cannot be wrapped in a nifty sentence or soundbite. There are a LOT of theories around the new implications of this mineral which is almost as important as air and water for humans.” *

… As important as air and water in humans?!  WOW! Magnesium is already present in our bodies and can also be found in plants and vegetables. It is responsible for energy production, regulating blood pressure, and healthy muscle and nerve function. Can you believe that the majority of the population are actually magnesium deficient?Being deficient can cause all sorts of issues like muscular cramping, restless leg syndrome and ill-health. It can make it harder for you to deal with stress and make it harder to get a good nights sleep. Unfortunately if magnesium is taken orally it can be destroyed by the gut and the benefits can not be reaped. It is said that magnesium can reduce stress, tension, regulate hormones, encourage sleep, relieve muscle aches, help with anxiety and skin conditions, among many other things.

IMG_7376 (2)

This is where AmazingOils Magnesium comes in. Amazing Oils is a family run Australian business that is all about health and well-being. Their magnesium is sourced from two secret natural salt lakes in Australia. These magnesium products are used externally which is absorbed straight through the skin and into our blood stream. More in-depth information about the science behind magnesium can be found here.

I have been using the magnesium bath flakes for around 5 weeks now and I love it. I am already an avid bath user, there is just something so relaxing about submerging your body in steamy hot water for half an hour and letting your thoughts drift off. I have a fairly stressful job, so I jump at the chance for a bit of relaxation time. I have been adding a handful of the bath flakes into my regular baths and this is probably going to sound silly, but, it has made a huge difference. My stress and worries instantly melt away and my aching neck is quickly soothed – even more so than my usual bath. It may be a placebo effect, or it could be that my body is crying out for magnesium – who knows. But I love it and don’t want it to stop. As soon as I get out of the tub I feel energised but supremely calm. My body feels tension and pain-free. This product also works wonders for period cramps and headaches. WINNER.

IMG_7689 (2)

The next product I have is the AmazingOils Ugly Bits stick, and man, does this product excite me. But the name makes me laugh every time. This little rollerball delivers a highly concentrated dose of magnesium straight to your skin, and is used for a multitude of things. Dab it on skin tags, moles, ingrown hairs, pimples – you name it and it’ll fix it. I have started using a Clarisonic recently and my skin is currently in the purging stage, so I have been popping this on any blemishes and they disappear overnight, if not in a few hours (praise the lord). I have a chronic ingrown hair on my bikini line, a few unsightly moles and skin tags that I would like to get rid of, so I’ve been rubbing the ugly sick (haha, that name) on them every day and watching them minimise before my eyes – Seriously, no joke.

IMG_7515 (2)

I also have the Magnesium Facial Cream, so I can give my skin and blemishes another blast of magnesium goodness. The cream is full of shea butter, coconut oil, hazelnut oil, vitamin E and apricot oil – so it is super hydrating to boot. It would be perfect for dry skinned pals, but if i use it sparingly it works perfectly on the greasy disco ball.

I have also read over at Nourished Life, that AmazingOils Magnesium flakes are food grade and a few flakes can be added to a litre of water for even more absorption. The amount of magnesium based product is huge and can’t recommend them enough. Next on my list is a magnesium rich salt scrub and a spray to apply straight to my sore neck.

Have you used magnesium before? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
