Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub – Tips and Tricks

Just in case you’re new here, or have ignored my praises of the Glycolic Scrub for the last two years, here is a little run down.  Targeted towards most skin types (excluding highly sensitive, red irritated skin), the Glycolic scrub is not only a physical scrub, but it also gives you the added benefits of chemical exfoliation, which in turn deeply cleans the pores and removed dead skin cells, leaving your skin as fresh as can be.  While the formula is super effective, it is surprisingly gentle for the amount of active ingredients.

Friends!

I am sure you have heard me rave on and on about my absolute holy grail skincare product, Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub 14%. It certainly isn’t a stranger to my social media channels, but I thought I would share with you a few extra uses, tips and tricks to make the most out of this little gem of a scrub.

IMG_5296

Quick Overview

Just in case you’re new here, or have ignored my praises of the Glycolic Scrub for the last two years, here is a little run down.  Targeted towards most skin types (excluding highly sensitive, red irritated skin), the Glycolic scrub is not only a physical scrub, but it also gives you the added benefits of chemical exfoliation, which in turn deeply cleans the pores and removed dead skin cells, leaving your skin as fresh as can be.  While the formula is super effective, it is surprisingly gentle for the amount of active ingredients. But I would recommend starting out sparingly, using the scrub only once or twice a week and only leaving on the skin for a few seconds. After a while you can amp up the frequency and play with the length of time it stays on your face.

Scrub

Well durr, Camille!  The standard use for the Glycolic Scrub is a 2-3 weekly treatment to keep skin clean and fresh. This is used in conjunction with your regular cleanser as an added deep clean. Just apply a pea-sized amount to a wet face and give yourself a gentle massage with the jojoba beads to reveal fresh, sparkly skin.

Intense Treatment

In addition to above, you can also leave the scrub on your face for much longer to allow the glycolic scrub to really get to work on those dead skin cells. On a clean face, I’ll massage in the product and leave it for the entirety of my shower. The steam will open up your pores allowing the product to penetrate deeper.  I do this when my skin is more congested than usual, or is looking a little dull.

Lip Scrub

While using this bad boy as a scrub, I sometimes lightly apply a small amount to my lips and very gently buff away any flaky skin. I must stress to you, not to open your mouth or lick your lips while their is scrub around, because it really doesn’t taste very pleasant. I find that most of the flaky skin is removed and my lips are prepped for a liquid lipstick

Spot Treatment

Have a particularly angry zit you need gone ASAP? Smack a dab of the scrub on your raging volcano and leave over night. The redness will be reduced, and hopefully so will the size. Remember to follow up with an oil-free moisturiser the next morning, as this treatment will dry out that pesky pimple, and the skin around it.

Body Exfoliator and/or Fake Tan Prep

Wanting to get rid of scaly skin? Planning on getting your faux glow on? The night before you plan to fake tan (Man, I am a poet), it’s best that you exfoliate those dry and knobbly bits to ensure an even application. By combining both the Skinsitut Glycolic Scrub and the Multi-Active Oil to dry skin and massaging in, you are giving those pins the pampering of a lifetime. After rinsing off, you’ll find your skin is buffed but super smooth and hydrated.

Kerastosis Pilaris

Have you ever noticed small bumps, or rough dry skin on the backs of your arms or legs? This common condition is called Kerastosis Pilaris and is completely harmless and easily treated topically with, you guessed it, my bestie Glycolic. Apply the scrub to the skin and leave for a few minutes to see smooth bump-free skin.

Ingrown Hairs

Do you suffer with in-grown hairs? Pesky little buggers.  The Glycolic Scrub can help you with this too! Seriously, what can’t it do?! By gently scrubbing the area, the Glycolic breaks down dead skin cells to enhance shedding of the skin, and the Jojoba beads buff the skin to encourage skin renewal while removing dirt, debris and even old hair from the follicle.  But use very sparingly around sensitive areas, I would NOT recommend getting this scrub anywhere near your lady bits.  Acid and vaginas DO NOT mix.

If you can’t tell, I am a slave to this scrubby miracle worker. It is a product that i am never without. It permanently lives in my shower and I cannot imagine it being replaced anytime soon. Do you have a holy grail skin-care product? Do you love the Glycolic Scrub as much as I?

Dermalogica // Adore Beauty

I have heard so many great things about Dermalogica, but I have never got around to getting it all up in my face. I adore cosmeceuticals and have been converted – I don’t really like using much else at the moment. So if I said I wasn’t looking forward to using the brand, I would most definitely be lying.

img_5002

As an introduction to Dermalogica, I thought the  Skin Kit would be a good start. Due to the greasiness of my mug, I opted for the Normal/Oily variation. This kit contains sample sized Special Cleansing Gel, Multi-Active Toner, Active Moist, Skin Prep Scrub and  Total Eye Care.

The Special Cleansing Gel* is a great all-round cleanser. It worked well with my Clarisonic , by foaming up just slightly. The gel is light, but removes makeup and dirt like a charm. My face doesn’t feel dry or tight afterwards which is usually what happens after I use a foaming cleanser. So that’s a huge plus. I think that this little guy would be ideal for sensitive skin. I like the cleanser, but to be completely honest, I don’t find it particularly special. There are other cleanser I  have used in the past that have given me great results for a fraction of the price.

img_5008

Multi-Active Toner*

I love me a facial mist, especially this time of the year. I look for something light, soothing, refreshing and not too sticky. This little guy ticks all the boxes. Full of Aloe, and Arnica, this toner is repairing and hydrating, plus it has a subtle lavender scent.I really love that I have this in a travel size. It is perfect for my handbag and for little refreshing sprays during the day. I find that it works particularly well in conjunction with the Active Moist moisturiser.

img_5005

Active Moist*

Active Moist is a super light-weight, gel like moisturiser that is perfect for my skin. It isn’t too heavy, too greasy and it absorbs quickly without leaving a film on my face. It works really well under makeup and doesn’t seem to cause any breakout or any extra texture to my skin. The only thing that I am not a huge fan of is the scent, it is quite strong and artificial smelling.

Skin Prep Scrub*

This scrub is quite thick and grainy in consistency, with a subtle woody kind of scent. It is a really nice physical exfoliator and polishes the skin nicely, without leaving it tight or dry. Although it does feel rather grainy, it doesn’t seem to scratch or irritate my skin. This little guy is probably my favourite from the skin kit, and I often have to pry it out of my boyfriend’s hands. Winner.

img_5004

Total Eye Care*

This little baby is really smooth and spreads nicely under my eyes. It doesn’t sting and absorbs relatively quickly, which  is perfect for pre-makeup prep. The eye cream isn’t too heavy and has a slight salmon tinted which is really great for dark circles. I really like this eye cream and will look into giving it more of a go to see if it’s worth the moolah.

I also have another few goodies that weren’t included in the starter kit.

Charcoal Rescue Masque *

Masks are my favourite, especially ones that target my pesky pores. And this one is a winner! This mask leaves my skin clean and fresh. It feels and looks a little less congested. I like to use this mask when my skin is looking a little dull and lack-lustre. I like to think of myself as a mask connoisseur, and Dermalogica’s Charcoal Rescue mask definitely ticks all the boxes. Probably my favourite Dermalogical product to date.

Oil Free Matte SPF 30 *

I have always really struggled with the sunscreen every damn day  routine. Not because I forget, or that I don’t care about sun damage. It is because I haven’t found a sunscreen that sits perfectly under my makeup. It usually makes my greasier – if that’s even possible? I break out, stink like chemicals or my makeup just slides right off. But, now I have found this. As the name suggests, It is matte and remains matte for the entire day. It’s light, absorbs quickly, doesn’t clog my pores or leave a white or oily film.  It sits perfectly under makeup and doesn’t reduce longevity, but actually controls my t-zone. Completely obsessed!

img_5009

Daily Resurfacer*

Since giving my skincare a lot of thought this year, my favourite discovery has been AHA’s and chemical exfoliation. Resurfacing and refining is what I am all about. And these little guys are no joke. These little swipeys fit right on the end of your finger (cute!) and removes any dead skin,  unclogs pores and gets to work on my textured skin. I love using these once a day, after cleansing and before moisturising. My skin glows and is left smooth and happy. I simply adore these. If you are having trouble with dullness, oil control, texture and blackheads, I could not recommend these enough.

Dr Dennis Gross Skincare – Review

I must have been living under a rock, because I had never heard of Dr Dennis Gross Skincare. Once I was aware of the brand, I had a little look around on the interwebs and found that it is a well-loved and raved about brand. I was sent a few of their best-selling products to trial and I thought I’d give my lovely readers some feedback on whether the products are up to scratch and worth the hefty price tags.

img_2262

Dr Dennis Gross is a certified Dermatologist and through his work was inspired by the common skin concerns of his patients and created a skincare line to address these concerns. ‘Dr. Dennis Gross personally formulates cruelty-free products using science & nature for clear, glowing skin, targeting lines, wrinkles, firmness, dry skin, & acne.’

Firstly, I just want to mention the overall packaging – I really like it. The packaging really reflects the brand and the medical background on which it is built upon. It is informative, clear and bright, without being too clinical. Each of the boxes outline what the product is, what it is meant to do and how to use it. I really like that it is straight forward and informs the user about the active ingredients. The brand really stand behind their products and their claims which I think is really important.

Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion Oil-Free Moisturiser.
The name alone of this bad boy has me sold. If I was on the hunt for a moisturiser and came across this on the shelf, there is a very good chance that I’d buy it without hesitation. Being an oily lass, oil free is the only way to go. Plus, my skin really reacts well to the addition of Hyaluronic acid in products. Anyway, enough of my first impressions, let’s dive in a little further. The box says that this moisturiser works twofold to restore hydration to your skin by drawing in moisture, then sealing it in to keep it looking dewy and supple throughout the day. The word dewy makes me a little nervous, as dewy for me means a hot greasy mess. The formula is really light-weight and light blue in colour. There is very subtle fresh scent, which isn’t offensive in the slightest. The moisturiser feels really refreshing on the skin and absorbs almost instantly. My skin does feel soft and supple and I’m really glad that there isn’t any dew in sight. Because of the light-weight formula, this little guy is perfect under makeup and creates the perfect canvas for your foundation. I really like it, really like it. It is similar to my favourite moisturisers of the moment and see it getting a heap of use in summer, when something  super light-weight is required. I am not sure whether it would it would provide enough hydration for you dry gals, but I couldn’t say for sure as hyaluronic acid is known for its hydration properties. I am really impressed with this product and would definitely recommend it to my other oily  skinned ladies. #oilyskinforlife

Clinical Concentrate Radiance Booster
When I first received the package, this little guy probably stood out the most – and not because of the bright orange bottle. This baby can be used alone as a serum or added to other face products, including foundation, to boost radiance. Very interesting. The radiance booster combines three acids – Pyruvic, Tartaric and Linoleic (all of which, I’ve never heard of) to resurface and firm the skin. The ingredients list is impressive and contains quite a large array of antioxidants like cucumber, watermelon, green tea and chamomile. The serum is almost watery and very light in colour, with a faint floral scent. Like the moisturiser, the formula is absorbed quickly and leaves no residue on the skin. I have been using this for around 4 weeks and have actually noticed a difference in my skin. It doesn’t look as dull and is definitely a touch brighter. I tend to think that this, in combination with the oil-free moisturiser, has actually regulated my oil production and made me a little more matte. So exciting! I  generally use it straight up as a serum, sometimes add it to my moisturiser, to increase benefits. I haven’t yet had the courage to add it to foundation, but I will shortly. Overall, I really like the results that I am seeing and using the product is a pleasure. The price point does make me grimace a little, so I do try to use it a little more sparingly than usual. This little orange bottle of goodness is a winner.

Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Overnight Serum

This serum states it ‘recovers firmness and helps smooth wrinkles caused by aging and the environment. This potent anti-aging serum delivers a time-released dose of retinol overnight to support skin’s natural repair process. A synergistic combination of retinol + ferulic adic and skin perfecting niacinamide re-textures skin for a more flawless complexion.’ The serum is housed in a brown plastic bottle with a handy pump. The formula is a creamy in colour and consistency. The scent is familiar but I can’t quite figure out why. It is slightly hospital-y but it isn’t bad. The serum is, as you’d expect from an overnight product, much thicker and takes slightly longer to sink into the skin. But when it does, my skin feels incredibly soft and smooth – I couldn’t stop stroking it, haha. I really like that it didn’t leave any oily residue as some treatments tend to do. I have only used it a short time but the results have been amazing. I’ve noticed little lines around my eyes disappear and the overall health of my skin improve with leaps and bounds. I am really excited to see the results after prolonged use.

Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel
Ever since becoming a beauty blogger, my favourite discovery has been AHA‘s especially when they are on cute and practical pre-soaked pads. So, I was really excited to learn that Dr Dennis Gross has created his own product to fit the category, however it has a few differences.

‘The ‘star’ of the skincare range, this two-step system was developed as a safe and effective, at-home treatment to improve the skin on a daily basis. A precise blend of Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids, it aims to improve the appearance of skin tone, texture, firmness, clarity, radiance, plus moisturise to leave skin soothed and balanced. Ideal for oily skin and those suffering acne and rosacea.’ – Mecca
The Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel contains both AHA‘s and BHA‘s , these acids are used resurface and refine the skin by fighting uneven skin tone, rough texture, enlarged pores and fine lines. If you are used to AHA’s, Glycolic Acids and facial peels you’ll be prepared for the process. However, for those new to peels, they can tingle and slightly sting for a couple of minutes after use – this is just the acids getting to work by chemically exfoliating. The peel encourages cell turnover to promote more healthy and brighter skin.
The 2-step system is a breeze to use, the pre-soaked pads are really practical and easy to swipe over your face. The scent is quite strong and fairly acidic but it doesn’t linger around for too long. The moisture quickly dries on the skin and no-reside is left. I would strongly suggest following up the treatment with a good quality moisturiser, as the acids can be a little drying.   I really enjoy chemical exfoliation and always see results after use. My skin is fresh, clearer and brighter. I love that these pads come individually packaged so that they don’t dry out. I believe you can buy the pads in tubs as well. I think that almost all skin-types would benefit from the use of chemical exfoliants, sensitive skin types should just take it easy at first.  If you buy any one product from the Dr Dennis Gross line, it should be this.

Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily
These little babies are pretty self-explanatory. They are based on the same premise as the Universal daily peel. but just a little bit stronger. I would suggest using the Universal peel first and if you’re after a little more, introduce the extra strength variety in slowly for tougher pigmentation and scarring.

Overall, Dr Dennis Gross’ Skincare range has really impressed me. My skin is looking the best it ever has. I understand that these products are pricey and will be out of people’s price range, heck, they’re even out of mine, buttttt after using them and seeing the results I would happily budget to be able to continue to use them. Dr Dennis Gross is sold at Mecca, so I would suggest going in for a peak and even requesting a few samples to see for yourselves.

Have you used any of Dr Dennis Gross’ range? Let me know.

Bare Babe Coconut and Coffee Exfoliating Mask

Hello 🙂

Happy Friday lovely people. Sorry for the lack of posts. I have been waiting on a few products to photograph, but it looks like some of my PR parcels have gone missing.  So frustrating! But alas, I have come across a new product that I have instantly fell in love with, and NEED to tell you guys about it.

IMG_9938 (2)

Bare Babe is a Coffee and Coconut Face Mask that comes in a humble little multi-use pouch. Aimed at all skin types for illumination, exfoliation, and nourishment. The mask is full of beautiful organic ingredients like Kaolin, Coconut Oil, Coffee Seed Powder, Almond Oil and Rosehip Oil.  The most distinguishing and remarkable thing about this mask is that it contains a natural pineapple enzyme (AHA), that chemically exfoliates the skin to perfection. This mask also smells so so so amazing. I seriously cannot get enough of the intoxicating chocolate coconut scent.  The formula itself is creamy with little spots of coffee. It applies really well and isn’t sticky at all.  The mask dries in about 10 minutes, however if you have sensitive skin it is recommended that the mask is only left on for 5 minutes. You can feel a slight tingle from the AHA, but it isn’t painful or overwhelming. It actually feels nice and you know that the mask is getting to work, buffing away at those pesky dead skin cells. Bare Babe is easy to remove; all you need is a nice warm cloth and a few circular movements. My skin was left a little pink, but it felt lovely and oh-so smooth. My face was plump, soft and felt really fresh. It has got to be one of the loveliest face mask I have ever used.  I have nothing bad to say about this product. Except maybe, that the pouch isn’t large enough, or that you can only enjoy it once a week, due to the AHA. Bare Babe is an absolute pleasure to use, I love smelling like a giant coconut rough Mmm…. I just need to add this to list of products I need a lifetime supply of.

A few more things to note is that Bare Babe is Australian-made,  99% natural, vegan friendly and cruelty free.  Plus this little guy is only $19.95 (with free postage). I would estimate that it contains around 4+ uses.  Do yourself a favour and check Bare Babe out –  I highly recommend this product.
